How ScriptTimerr calculates speaking time
The formula
Estimated seconds = counted units ÷ units per minute × 60 + additional seconds. A target budget subtracts additional seconds before converting the remaining time into units, rounding down. For 650 words at 130 WPM plus 30 additional seconds, the result is 5:30. A five-minute target leaves a budget of 585 words.
Language and units
Word-based languages use the browser’s Intl.Segmenter word-like segments. Chinese, Japanese and explicit character mode count letter/number grapheme clusters. Spaces and punctuation are excluded. When automatic segmentation is unavailable, use manual count mode. Character rates are CPM; word rates are WPM. Numbers and abbreviations are not expanded into their spoken forms.
Pace assumptions
The English 130 WPM starting value is an editable planning assumption. Other languages ask for a custom or measured rate. A measured rate applies only after you confirm a complete reading of at least ten seconds. For a useful measurement, prefer a longer representative passage and repeat it.
Limits
Timing depends on pronunciation, pauses, delivery style and improvisation. Rehearsal gives an actual elapsed duration but does not verify which words you spoke. Estimated section times exclude your separately entered additional holds. The timer excludes intervals when you explicitly pause it. Device sleep can affect browser clocks; keep the device awake during a rehearsal.
